Vox AC4 TV 10 Inch Version Review
You might want to consider purchasing the Vox AC4 TV amp with a 10 inch speaker. This is an all tube (a single EL84 power tube and a 12AX7 preamp tube) equipped with Sovtek tubes stock. The speaker is a 10 inch Celestion, an upgrade over the Fender Champion 600's 6-1/2 inch Fender speaker. Most of the time the Fender Champion 600 is modified out of necessity, where the Vox AC4 is able to be used right out of the box. It remains to be seen if I am going to want to do any mods at some point in the future. There is an 8 inch speaker version, and a mini with a 6-1/2 inch speaker-- if you are looking for smaller and more portable. The smaller speakers though will cost you some level of fullness in sound and tone.
The purpose of this amp is so that I have something small to practice with at low volumes, while still getting good blues sound. Also, it is light (under 20 lbs.) for my very bad back. Finally, the best feature about this small combo amp is that it has an attenuator switch which allows you to play with overdrive sounds at a low volume level-- three choices-- 4 watts, 1 watt and 1/4 watt! This Vox AC4 TV amp has an extension speaker output for a 16 ohm extension speaker cab. I plan to plug it into my VHT Special 6 closed-back cab with a 12 inch speaker frequently, increasing the flexibility of this unit.
Chuck the 12AX7 for 5751. More headroom with the volume control. Open the back a little by cutting some of the material in a narrow rectangle. Finally, install a choke in place of the resistor R16. 1 henry, 200 mA tops to get rid of the hum. Other mods are cap swaps. C5 upped to 22nf for bass. C4 upped to 470pf for improved tone control range. This is a great sounding amp out of the box & can get even better.
